The Bible tells us that we are all sinners, less perfect than God who is holy, or completely perfect.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23
God says that there is a penalty for the sins we have committed, and that is death. It is not just physical death, but spiritual death--separation from God forever in a literal Hell.
God's Word also says that no sin can enter heaven, because that is where God lives. God, being perfect, cannot dwell with sin. Man must be completely perfect and without sin to enter Heaven. Notice in the following verse that not even one lie can enter Heaven!
"And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth,
neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life." Revelation 21:27.
The Bible is also very clear that there is absolutely nothing you can do to obtain the sinless perfection God requires to enter Heaven. No amount of good deeds or intentions can make you good enough to get in. Remember: a death payment is the penalty for sin, not good works.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should
boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
This is bad news so far, but now comes the good news! There is another attribute of God...His love. Because God loves you so much, and did not want you to spend forever separated from Him, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, to earth to make the death payment required for all your sin. He died in your place and paid for your sin . He then literally came back from the dead to prove that God was satisfied with what He had done.
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in
him." 2 Corinthians 5:21
All you can do to have everlasting life is to believe, or trust, Jesus Christ and Him alone as your personal Savior. It is not Jesus and your good deeds. It is Jesus alone. Notice Jesus' words in the verse below, and what He said was required for everlasting life:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
God promises to give you the free gift of eternal life the moment that you make the decision to trust Christ, instead of yourself, to get you to Heaven. He cannot lie. You can know that you are going to Heaven when you die, not because you are a good person, but because of what Jesus did for you on the cross. You could never know for sure, if it was based upon your good works. How many would ever be enough? God says we can be assured of Heaven because of Christ's work on the cross in our place.
"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life..." 1 John 5:13
If you have never made the decision to transfer your trust from yourself to what Christ did for you on the cross, make that decision right now. You may want to pray and talk to God, although praying a prayer does not save you. God saves you the moment you realize it is all of what Christ did, and none of what you can do.
